Safeguarding Policy

Safeguarding Policy

1. Core Philosophy and Commitment
As a self-employed, person-centred BACP registered therapist, my practice is grounded in the belief that every individual has the inherent right to safety, dignity, and autonomy. I am committed to providing a therapeutic environment that is secure, respectful, and free from harm.
This policy applies to all clients, with particular focus on children, young people, and adults at risk. My safeguarding practices align strictly with the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions as well as the statutory guidance of the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014.

2. The Person-Centred Approach to Safeguarding
In line with person-centred principles, I view safeguarding as a collaborative process rather than a policing action.
Prioritising Autonomy: Wherever safe and legally permissible, I will discuss any safeguarding concerns directly with the client first.
Collaboration: I aim to seek the client's informed consent before making any external referrals or reports.
Empowerment: The client's voice, wishes, and feelings will remain central to how any safety or protection concerns are addressed.

3. Limits of Confidentiality
Confidentiality is fundamental to the therapeutic relationship, but it is not absolute. In accordance with professional standards and UK law, confidentiality may be breached if:
There is a clear and imminent risk of serious harm to the client or to others.
A child, young person, or adult at risk is experiencing, or is at risk of, abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
I am legally mandated to disclose information (e.g., under terrorism, drug trafficking, or money laundering legislation, or via a court order).

4. Procedures for Handling Concerns
If a safeguarding concern arises during our work together, I will follow these steps:
Assessment: Gently explore the concern within the session, assessing immediate risk while maintaining a non-judgmental, supportive stance.
Consultation: Seek immediate guidance from my clinical supervisor to ensure objective, ethical decision-making.
Action: If an external report is necessary to prevent harm, I will contact the relevant local authority safeguarding team (e.g., Vale of Glamorgan Council Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub - MASH) Click Here
Transparency: Unless doing so increases the immediate risk of harm, I will inform the client of the actions I am taking and why.

5. Accountability and Professional Standards
To maintain the highest standards of safety, I undertake to:
Hold a current, active registration with the BACP. Click Here
Maintain an up-to-date Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.
Participate in regular clinical supervision where safeguarding capacity is reviewed.
Complete ongoing professional development and training in adult and child safeguarding, specific to the legislation of Wales.
